Chiropractic Care for Herniated Discs

The latest statistics suggest that about 65 million Americans have had a recent episode of back pain. It is estimated that almost 8 percent of adults, 16 million people, suffer from chronic back pain. There are a variety of reasons for back pain, and today we will focus on a condition labeled herniated disc.

What is a Herniated Disc?

A herniated disc (also called bulged, slipped or ruptured) is a fragment of the disc nucleus that is pushed out of the annulus, into the spinal canal through a tear or rupture in the annulus. The spinal canal has limited space, which is inadequate for the spinal nerve and the displaced herniated disc fragment. Due to this displacement, the disc presses on spinal nerves, often producing pain, which may be severe.[1]

Some of the top causes for herniated discs include:

  • Plain old-fashioned wear and tear
  • Incorrect lifting
  • Some type of injury
  • Repetitive movements
  • Genetics

Herniated discs are more common in the lumbar and neck regions of the spine, but can happen anywhere along the spinal column. Pain is often dictated by where the herniation occurs.  Luckily, most herniated discs do not require surgery, and this is great news. It is also good news to note that with time, the condition can improve with treatment.

How Does Chiropractic Treatment Heal Herniated Discs?

Chiropractic treatment is very effective for the pain and discomfort of herniated discs. It is also popular with patients due to the non-invasive nature of the treatment, meaning there are not drugs or injections involved with chiropractic treatment for herniated discs.

At Han’s Chiropractic, we focus on the entire spine, not just the area that is herniated for optimum overall health. Low force techniques are used relieve painful symptoms around the herniated area. Sometimes, cervical or traction machines are helpful to open joints and take pressure off the disc. Additionally, acupuncture techniques may be used in conjunction with spinal manipulation.

If you are experiencing back pain, especially low back pain, try chiropractic adjustment! You have everything to gain—less pain, better mobility, non-invasive treatment—and nothing to lose. Let Dr. Ryan Han get you back on the road to optimum health.
